Avinor’s main hub, Oslo Airport (OSL), has quietly introduced one of the most human travel initiatives in the Nordics: certified therapy dogs greeting passengers inside the terminal.
Airports usually compete on efficiency. Faster security. Smarter scanners. Better lounges. More charging points.
Oslo decided to compete on something else entirely: emotional wellbeing.
Travelers passing through OSL may encounter calm, trained therapy dogs like Lilla, a gentle Shetland Sheepdog who visits with volunteer handlers. They are not a marketing gimmick or a viral stunt. They are there for one simple reason:
People sometimes need a moment to breathe.
And occasionally, that moment has four legs and a wagging tail.
🐕 Why Therapy Dogs at Airports Actually Make Sense
The dogs are carefully selected for stable temperaments and trained to handle crowds, rolling suitcases and loud announcements. Interaction is voluntary — no pressure, no performance.
A short cuddle can:
- reduce pre-flight anxiety
- ease fear of flying
- soften long-haul fatigue
- calm nervous children
- give overstretched staff a rare smile
Research consistently shows that brief contact with therapy animals lowers stress hormones and blood pressure. In an environment built around movement and control, the dogs introduce something rare in modern travel:
Stillness.
It’s innovation without screens.
Service without upgrades.
Technology without technology.
Sometimes progress simply wags its tail.
✈️ The Nordic Airport Question
Here’s the gently sarcastic thought:
If Oslo Airport understands that calm travelers = better travel experience…
Where are the cuddle dogs in:
- Copenhagen Airport
- Stockholm Arlanda Airport
- Helsinki Airport
Nordic airports are already global leaders in design and efficiency. Copenhagen is repeatedly ranked among Europe’s best-connected hubs. Helsinki has refined the art of smooth long-haul transfers between Europe and Asia. Stockholm blends Scandinavian minimalism with functionality.
We’ve seen:
- yoga rooms
- silent zones
- premium lounges
- moss walls and Nordic design furniture
All excellent.
But none have (yet) said:
“Let’s give passengers a friendly dog before boarding.”
It feels almost inevitable that the rest of the region will follow. After all, the Nordics are known globally for trust, human-centered design and high wellbeing standards — themes we’ve explored in our feature on why Denmark consistently ranks among the least corrupt countries in the world (read more here).
Until then, Oslo holds a rather charming unofficial title:
The Most Emotionally Intelligent Airport in the Nordics.
And frankly, they’ve earned it.
Having said all that, the Nordic airports are actually some of the most punctual airports in the world.
🧳 Calm Travel Is the Ultimate Luxury
At Best of Nordic, we love stories like this because they reflect something fundamental about Nordic travel culture:
The best experiences are not always the loudest ones.
Whether you’re landing at Oslo Airport on your way to a fjord program, heading through Copenhagen for a design-focused incentive or transferring in Helsinki en route to Lapland, the principle remains the same:
Travel works best when it feels effortless.
That’s exactly how we design our Nordic programs — from corporate incentives and executive retreats to study visits and multi-country itineraries across Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
We handle logistics.
We coordinate suppliers.
We manage timing.
We anticipate friction before it happens.
So even if your departure airport hasn’t introduced cuddle dogs yet…
You still travel with peace of mind — because everything behind the scenes is already under control.
